FM System

The Frequency Modulation Systems (FM) is an assistive technology resource that contributes to improving accessibility for hearing impaired individuals who use electronic devices. Therefore, the goal of this project is to train education professionals to use the FM system in the school environment in order to contribute to the academic development of hearing impaired people who use electronic devices.

The device works as a wireless microphone for the cochlear implant (CI) and/or the individual sound amplification device (ISAD); therefore, depending on the technology currently used, it is known as remote microphone (REMIC). It consists of two parts: a transmitter and a receiver. And it works as follows: the transmitter has a microphone and is as close as possible to the interlocutor’s mouth, like a lapel microphone, which will send the teacher’s speech to the receiver that is attached to the audio input or telephone coil of the ISAD and/or CI of the hearing impaired person.

According to the Ministry of Health, 19,398 FM systems were granted between July 2013 and July 2019. However, despite the urgent need for the training of teachers for its use in the classroom, by the year 2019 only 69 teachers from the Public Network of Rio Grande do Norte took the 180-hour training course developed by researchers from UFRN, FOB/USP, PUC/SP, UFRJ and UFES.

Electronic Devices

Every hearing impaired person has the right to receive an ISAD and/or cochlear implant by the Brazilian Health System (related to the type, degree, configuration of the hearing loss and its impacts).

FM System

Every child from 5 to 17 years and 11 months is entitled to receive the FM system through the Brazilian Health System.

Teacher Training

Teachers are as much FM users as the children, so it is recommended that they have the information and skills to effectively use this system in the school environment.
